Jean-Philippe Fortier

Originally from the Eastern Townships, Jean-Philippe Fortier has called Montreal home for more than ten years now. He is not only an experienced drummer, with a DEC in popular music and classical percussion as well as a BAC in Jazz performance, but also a skilled vibraphonist. He plays a variety of percussion instruments as well.

He studied with great teachers such as Camil Bélisle, Paul Brochu, Pierre Pilon, Nasyr Abdul Al Khabyyr, and percussionist François Gauthier.

Gifted with a great degree of creativity, Jean-Philippe brings professionalism, experience and energy to every project he undertakes. Passionate for music and madly in love with the drums, his studio work, live performances and recording sessions are fueled by a constant need for new challenges.

His affinity for playing different styles and his capacity to learn quickly has permitted Jean-Philippe to become a member of many projects over the past few years. Of particular note is the Brazilian jazz quintet Blue Dance, an active group on the Montreal, Quebec and Ontario music scenes. Some of the group’s recent achievements are it’s award of a FACTOR grant, the recording of a full-length original album, a performance at the All-Canadian Jazz Festival as well as over fifty performances over the course of the last year.

His collaboration with Jean-Philip, an artist from Quebec City, has permitted Jean-Philippe Fortier to express himself in an altogether different universe: Rock. This partnership, lasting more than three years up to date, has permitted the formation to record two mini-albums as well as one full-length album, comprised of original material. Traveling throughout Quebec with their unique fusion of music, blending traditional rock with electronica; the group has built a fan base thanks to their collaboration with les Productions du Bunker d’Auteuil.

In addition to playing an important role in the exciting and motivating groups listed above, Jean-Philippe also freelances for various artists, groups and production companies. His work experience includes the recording of several television jingles as well as innumerable performances in the blues, rock, jazz and world music idioms.

Another of Jean-Philippe’s important past achievements is his involvement with the band Makiavel, which has won many music contests including Proscène et Envol and Macadam. He also worked as a musician in show bands for various cruise ship agencies, giving him the opportunity to travel throughout Mexico, the Pacific Rim, Europe and the United-States.

Very proud and grateful for his accomplishments both past and present, Jean-Philippe confidently awaits what the future has in store. He believes that music is an ever-progressing art form whose increasing facets know no end. In addition to his numerous projects, Jean-Philippe is a music instructor, both privately and for various schools.
